Jeff Martin, aka Martini, got his start in the clothing business during his last year attending the University of Victoria. He began importing and distributing a line of clothing by the name of X-New loosely affiliated with Mike D of the Beastie Boy’s X-Large brand and Jeff eventually acquired the exclusive rights in Canada to the X-New label. This led to his initial foray into fashion design spawning both the updated Extra New line and women’s line of clothing by the name of Scenery and motivated Jeff to look for other business opportunities.

One such opportunity that presented itself was an upstart hip hop clothing and music store by the name of F.W.U.H. In 1996 Jeff purchased fifty percent of the company and embarked on a program to grow the fledgling hip hop shop into successful a fashion and music entity. Over the next few years Jeff introduced many independent hip hop based brands to Vancouver combined with major brands like Polo Sport and Tommy Hilfiger, and solidified the store as a hip hop fashion, music and lifestyle destination well known across North America.

One very notable brand that emerged from this era was the Vancity Original Brand. This came literally off the back of an F.W.U.H shop logo tee that Jeff had put “Vancity Original Since 1994″ on the back of to signify the year the store was born. The popularity of the tee was the catalyst for the start of the Vancity Original brand in 1998. 10 years later the brand, consisting simply of tees and custom New Era caps, is at an all time high in popularity and has been seen across the globe in places such as Jamaica, Paris, Atlanta, New York and across Canada.

By early 2000 Jeff was sensing an explosion in the hip hop clothing market. Wanting to expand the market and have more of a hip hop fashion boutique, Jeff sold his share in F.W.U.H in May of that year. Until this time “hip hop shops” had typically been dark, uninviting and poorly merchandised stores off the beaten path. Jeff had a vision to have a fashion boutique that catered to hip hop minded people but was presented in a way that would attract not only core hip hop consumers but anyone looking for new, exciting and exclusive clothing. December 11, 2000 Dipt was born. The response was unbelievable! As hoped, the store, while keeping its hip hop aesthetic, attracted a broad range of customers the first ever being non other than Master P. Eight years later, a few brand updates and renovations and an amended name, Dipt remains one of the most renowned hip hop and streetwear clothing, footwear and accessory retail stores in the country and worldwide for that matter.

Along the way Martini also became a well know shoe collector know primarily for his vast collection of Nike Air Force 1’s. Boasting a collection consisting of over 500 colorways of the AF1 alone his collection has been documented in magazines, videos, documentaries and most recently in last years Nike x Peace Magazine publication commemorating the 25th anniversary of the shoe.

Jeff has rounded out his business by partnering with long time associate and one time Dipt manager, Justin Jung to form Offshoot West agency. Offshoot West is a boutique sales agency specializing in exclusive streetwear brands such as 10 Deep, Staple, Mishka, Akomplice, Starter and others that services hand picked stores across western Canada.
